A 19th Century listed building in Boston is to be put up for sale or lease by the borough council.

The Assembly Rooms in the Lincolnshire town was finished in 1822 and is Grade II listed.

Boston Borough Council has agreed that it will now be marketed nationwide at a meeting of its cabinet.

The authority said it could no longer afford to maintain the property, as it would need to spend 拢150,000 to repair the outside of the building.

Councillor Mike Gilbert, from the borough council, said: "There is no way the town is going to be adversely affected by any commercial opportunities that the building offers.

"The building will still have pride of place in Boston market place and perhaps will once again become the proud building it deserves to be."

The rooms, were once a popular dance venue in the town and have more recently been hired out as a wedding and conference venue by the council.
