An emergency exercise focused on a simulated collision between two aircraft has taken place at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The training, which ran for two hours from 10:30 GMT, was planned to test procedures in the event of a full scale emergency.

About 60 volunteers and about 100 emergency services personnel took part.

Airports are required by the Civil Aviation Authority to hold a full emergency exercise every two years.

Staff from the airport, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Merseyside Police and the North West Ambulance Service took part.

An airport spokesman said despite the training, the airport has been operating a normal service and no passengers or airlines have been affected.
