The first phase of 拢100m plans to modernise Glan Clwyd hospital in Denbighshire is due to start soon.

The initial phase includes removing asbestos found in some operating theatres at the hospital in Bodelwyddan as well as refurbishing them.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) says work is due to start this month and take 14 months.

During the work, two mobile theatres will be used on-site.

Some minor operations are expected to be transferred to Llandudno hospital.

The first phase of the redevelopment at Glan Clwyd includes refurbishing the original part of the hospital building, built in the 1970s.

It is part of BCUHB's 拢100m plans to modernise hospital facilities which also include improvements to facilities and services in accident and emergency and critical care.

The board said money for the first phase had been agreed, with a final decision expected in March for the remainder.

The Welsh Assembly Government is helping to finance some of the work.
