Two people have been killed and 17 injured in an attack on a police station in southern Colombia.

Officials said an explosive device was thrown at the police station in Orito, killing the wife and eight-month-old baby of the local commander.

Police said the country's largest left-wing guerrilla group, the Farc, had launched the attack.

Officials also suspect the rebels to be behind a bomb attack on a police station in Cauca province on Saturday.

No-one was injured in the attack in Suarez, in the south-west of the country, as the explosive devices rebounded off a metal fence protecting the police station.

Police said that the Farc had stepped up their attacks on the security forces in 2011, but that the rebels had to abandon large-scale offensives after being weakened by military operations and desertions.

They said the rebels had returned to guerrilla tactics, targeting more remote locations and ambushing passing patrols.
