What titles has Andy Murray won in 2016?

Andy Murray has become Britain's first world number one tennis player. He won his first title of 2016 by beating then Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-3 in the Italian Open final. The final was actually held on the 15 May, which is Murray's birthday. What a way to celebrate!
In June, the Scot became the first man to win the Queen's Club title five times. He beat Canadian Milos Raonic 6-7 6-4 6-3 in the final. It was Ivan Lendl's first tournament back as Andy's coach after their split in March 2014. In their first spell together, Murray won two grand slam titles and an Olympic gold medal.
It wasn't long before Murray added a third title in 2016, winning the Wimbledon final a few weeks after his victory at Queen's. Once again, it was Canadian Milos Raonic who he faced in the final, but this time he beat him in straight sets 6-4 7-6 7-6.
In August, Andy added to Team GB's huge Rio 2016 haul of 27 golds by beating Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the men's singles final. He became the first man ever to win two Olympic singles tennis titles. He was also chosen to carry the flag for Great Britain at the Rio 2016 opening ceremony.
He secured his fifth title of 2016 by beating Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4 7-6 in the China Open final. This was the 40th of his career.
Then just a week later, it was victory again in the Shanghai Masters, where he beat Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets and edged closer to the world number one ranking.
His next win in Vienna against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, secured his third title in a row and his third title of October. The win also put him in a position to reach the world number one ranking in the next tournament in Paris.
If Novak Djokovic did not reach the final in Paris and Murray won the tournament, the number one ranking would be his - and that's just what happened! He beat John Isner in the final and is Britain's first singles number one, since computerised rankings were introduced in 1973!
So what next for Murray now he's reached the top? He now heads to the end of season World Tour Finals in London as the new world number one, where he'll try to fend off Novak Djokovic and hold on to his top ranking.
