Giant food: How did these fruit and veg get so big?

We're going to see a lot of pumpkins in the shops this month but doubt they'll be as big as these! Growers gathered in Wisconsin, USA, for an annual contest to see who's managed to grow the biggest pumpkins this season. The pumpkins that turn up weigh around 600-700kg - that's about 100 times heavier than the big ones that you see carved up into lanterns! You'll get a lot of pumpkin pie from it too!
This is the world's heaviest avocado - weighing in at 5.6 pounds - the same as a small baby! It's bigger than an average 12-year-old's head! The record-breaking avocado is no more though - it apparently was turned into enough guacamole for 20 people. The Pokini family, who grew it in Hawaii, USA, say they hope to harvest more giant avocados. Bravocado!
Aharon Shemoel from Israel must have a real zest for producing citrus fruits after growing these enormous lemons. The heaviest of the two weighed a ridiculous 5kg. That's like two chihuahuas!
Spud you believe it!? Khalil Semhat, a farmer from Lebanon, discovered this huge potato growing in his field. It was so heavy he had to get a friend to help him pull it out of the ground... sounds like a nursery rhyme but wasn't that a turnip?
It's takes two to mango - couple Sergio and Maria Socorro Bodiongan from the Philippines scooped the world record for the heaviest mango.
Look how happy gardener Peter Glazebrook is - it brings a tear to our eyes! He grew this world record breaking giant onion which won him a big prize at Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.
We would really 'leek' to know how Paul Rochester from County Durham managed to grow this world record breaking leek. It weighed an massive 10.6kg.
'Leaf' it out, this is the biggest cabbage we've ever seen! Sebastian Lueders from Germany could barely fit in the photo with this enormous cabbage beside him.
Derbyshire grandad, Raghbir Singh Sanghera, grew this whopper of a cucumber in his greenhouse. It measures a massive 129cm in length!
