Students take on Black Shuck

Students from Notre Dame and Earlham High School have made a convincing 'news report' on the East Anglian myth of Black Shuck, drawing inspiration from Waiting For Bigfoot, part of the EASTinternational exhibition at the Norwich Gallery.

Students from Notre Dame and Earlham High School have made a realistic report on the East Anglian myth of Black Shuck.

The report, which took three days to make in the 麻豆官网首页入口 studios in Norwich, was inspired by a trip to the EASTinternational exhibition at the Norwich Gallery.

Creatures of myth and legend

The students were particularly taken by a piece by artist Jill Miller, entitled Waiting For Bigfoot.

Miller is camping out in the forests of California in order to try and find the legendary Bigfoot, with no one but herself for company and three web cameras set up to record any footage.

While at the Norwich Gallery, the students were told about Black Shuck by storyteller David Tong, who gave them a number of different stories and possible sightings of Black Shuck.

Uniting the two myths together, both having big, hairy bodies (Bigfoot and Black Shuck, not the students), the pupils decided to make a news-style report on the apparent sightings and murders.

Making a news report

With the support of 麻豆官网首页入口 Voices, AimHigher and the Norwich Gallery, the students spent three days making their news report at the 麻豆官网首页入口's studio in Norwich as well as shooting on location - staging shots of buried bodies and blood-stained signs - to make the myth all the more believable.

"The deadlines were very tight," said Eleanor, who acted as one of the presenters for the news report.

"We had to get things working properly. For example, the presenters had to give the graphic designers a script before they could do anything else, because they needed it to start working on the right graphics for the show," she added.

The report, while having a few minor hiccups, looks very professional and anyone seeing it during a Look East program would be hard pressed to tell whether or not these attacks were real.

The unbiased presenters never flinch or give any sign that they're joking - but it's not all down to the presenters, as the other students will attest.

The students took on different roles, including graphic designer, presenters, reporter, camera person, editors and script writers. In order to make a convincing project, the students had to work together in their new roles.

"We went on the streets to interview the public about the myth of Black Shuck, to see if they knew anything about it," said Michaela Reeve, the on-location reporter.

Chris Sillis filmed Michaela's report, which was then edited by Liam Hacket and Jamie Bales. The whole thing was brought together by Rachel Goulding's script, and Noel Marques-Neves and Jamie Mackay finished it off with some slick graphics.

Hey, btw, this was a school project that I happily took part in. We ain't spoiling this myth, in fact, we're bringing it out so others can learn from it.
