1. Walk when you can.
It's the all too easy option to take the car even if you're just
popping to the post box. There might be times when you can walk,
cycle or use public transport without greatly inconveniencing
yourself.
Besides which, walking and cycling are extremely good forms of
exercise.
2. Try to buy locally-produced food.
Food that has travelled a long way to get to you will have produced
pollution on the way (throught fuel being used during its transport).
Not only does buying locally-produced food cut down on pollution
but it allows you to have a better idea of where the food has
been reared or grown. You can support local farmers and find sources
of organic produce.
3. Limit your use of water.
We're not asking you to go thirsty but there are times when you
could use less water without causing yourself any harm or discomfort.
Ask yourself: Do I really need to keep the tap on while I brush
my teeth? Does the car need to washed every weekend? Do I need
to use a sprinkler on the garden?
Most people will find that there are times when they can cut down
on the amount of water that they use.
4. Re-use and recycle
There are plenty of ways in which make the Earth's resources go
further. Recycling is one green activity which we have all heard
of but, where possible, re-using thing like plastic carrier bags
can make them go further still.
This is because by recycling things we are putting them into a
cycle that uses energy to turn them into new items. Where we can
re-use we can avoid using energy unnecessarily.
Remember though that recycling is better than disposing of rubbish
in landfill.
5. Use less electricity
Most people have electric appliances in their home but in many
cases these get left switched on unnecessarily. Many goods like
televisions and computers now have 'standby' options which mean
that they use electricity constantly.
Other ways to cut down electricity consumption include switching
of lights when they are not needed and drying clothes naturally
rather than using a tumble-dryer.
