Mike Boyle

I am from Drummuck near Maghera. I attended Trench Belfast in the mid-1960s and Seamus Heaney was one of my teachers. I am now working on a new play about N.Ireland in 1956. Would you believe it that as a "nipper" I was a Christmas Rhymer in South Derry and that then a few years later I took part in the famous mummering tradition of Newfoundland?

The Golden Chariot Wheel by Mike Boyle

From the far back hill

you could see clegs on cow's tails

in different counties.

Slemish , Carn and Gallon.-These

majestic mountains standing guard

for the empty iron cartwheel rusting

so long ago in low sloe filled hedgerow.

The young explorers drag pull it and

give it a spin. it starts to wobble in dips and flips

and it falls like a huge ring.

Then it happened.

The rim was lifted and held vertical-

now pushed down the steep hillside.

-Glinted in the sunlight and it began

hopping over field hedges and ditches

Over the ivy tree and hay stack.

grazing cattle scattered.

Insects hid under rocks and birds screamed aloud.

and it headed towards the road and house.

Now terrified of the danger-

We were glad the Golden chariot wheel

missed Paddy Mooney's front window as it

carved in to the hay bales in the front stable

Coming to rest.
