A Historic tour of Mansfield

The Market Place
The Market Place

Start at the heart
Mansfield grew up around the junction of two ancient routes, one from Nottingham, the other from Southwell. It is far enough from these towns to have become a commercial centre in its own right, so here is the market place at the meeting of the ways.

Civic pride
The market place contains not one but two former Town Halls. The classical building which dominates the square was built by a private company in 1836, at a time when the town was rapidly outgrowing its old municipal facilities.

In the centre of the Market Place is the memorial to popular politician Lord George Bentinck (1802-1848, son of the Duke of Portland).
