The British are turning to cake to cheer themselves up in the face of mounting gloom at the state of the economy, according to evidence from popular recipe website .
The cooking website has revealed that cake has replaced chicken as the most searched word on their online search engine, as Brits combat tumbling house prices, rising inflation and collapsing banks with sugar, flour, eggs, chocolate and syrup, among other comforting ingredients.

The website has found that while the value of the stock market has plummeted in the past two weeks, searches for the word 'cake' on the Good Food recipe search engine have soared. In the past two weeks there have been 12,300 requests for cake recipes, compared to 9,749 for chicken, which was previously the most searched for foodstuff on the bbgoodfood.com site.
听
Consumers are turning to the site as a trusted source of over 300 'triple-teste' cake recipes including treats such as orange drizzle cake and cherry swirl cheesecake. Over the past year searches for cake recipes have rocketed by more than 100 per cent.

The cake theme is continued in 麻豆官网首页入口 Good Food magazine's November issue, on sale this week, which features charity cupcakes baked by celebrity chefs for Children in Need. In support of the charity Good Food magazine is providing the recipes to encourage readers to bake and sell to raise money for the cause.

According to Good Food Editorial Director Gillian Carter: "It's fascinating, but not totally surprising to see people reach for comfort food in these trying times. We Brits are reacting with typical stoicism and instead baking more cakes, which go rather well with that other very British vice in times of stress, a cup of tea.

"Our website contains huge selection of cake recipes so they should be spoilt for choice. The magazine also features fun recipes for cupcakes decorated by some of the best known celebrity chefs in the country."
