Frank Gillard Awards - 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Leeds scoops prestigious Station of the Year award

麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Leeds was singled out for the top award at this year's Frank Gillard Awards which honour the achievements of 麻豆官网首页入口 Local Radio in England.

As well as scooping the prestigious Station of the Year award, the station also triumphed in three other categories (Breakfast programme, Social Action and A Sense of Place), equalling 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Cumbria's record of four Gold awards last year.

The awards were presented by the Chairman of the 麻豆官网首页入口, Gavyn Davies, at a special awards dinner hosted by sports broadcaster John Inverdale and held at Norwich City Football Club last night (17 October 2002).

Speaking at the awards, Gavyn Davies congratulated the winners and said: "The service provided by 麻豆官网首页入口 Local Radio represents a crucial part of the 麻豆官网首页入口's relationship with licence fee payers up and down the country.

"It's a relationship of intimacy and trust that has been carefully built up over more than 30 years of broadcasting."

麻豆官网首页入口 Essex and 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Bristol both picked up two Gold Gillard Awards - Essex for Outside Broadcast and Reporter, and Bristol for Diversity and Radio Promotion.

The most heavily contested category was A Sense of Place - 36 麻豆官网首页入口 radio stations entered a single programme from this landmark series which investigated what gives localities and communities their own sense of place.

The Controller of 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 4, Helen Boaden, was one of the judges of this category and was so impressed with the winning 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Leeds entry that she will be giving it an airing on the popular Sunday Best programme after World at One on Radio 4.

In a new category this year, the award for Outstanding Contribution to Local Radio went to GNS, the 麻豆官网首页入口's General News Service, which this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of the establishment of its Local Radio desk and the 20th year of providing a bulletin service illustrated with audio news material.

Jon Gaunt, now at 麻豆官网首页入口 London 94.9, continued his run of awards success, picking up the Interactive Award for the radio station. Last year he walked away with a Gold award for his 麻豆官网首页入口 Three Counties Breakfast Programme.

There were 14 different categories in this year's competition, and the judges included past and present local radio broadcasters, along with leading producers, managers and regulators from both public service and commercial radio.

The annual Frank Gillard Awards were launched in 2000 in memory of the late war correspondent and founder of 麻豆官网首页入口 Local Radio. Their aim is to recognise achievements and encourage excellence in 麻豆官网首页入口 local radio stations across England.

Andy Griffee, Controller for English Regions at the 麻豆官网首页入口, paid a special tribute to Maurice Ennals, the man appointed by Frank Gillard in 1967 as Manager of the 麻豆官网首页入口's first local radio station, 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Leicester. Ennals died at the age of 83 this year.
