A record 49.9 million page impressions were recorded on the 麻豆官网首页入口 News website on 6 May, the highest figure in the site's history.

The figure beat the previous best of 40.5 million after the United States Presidential election in 2004.

The site, at bbc.co.uk/news, attracted 4.9 million unique users on 6 May: again a record, beating 4.5 million for the US election.

More than 2.5 million people accessed the interactive maps on the day after the election, and there were 306,000 users of the audio/video streams - making 940,000 requests.

The most-requested clip was George Galloway's argument with Jeremy Paxman.

The postcode results search, offering a rapid route to results in individual constituencies, had a total of 2.4 million requests on 5/6 May.

Over the course of the campaign, the site's Election 2005 coverage attracted 69.7 million page impressions from 5 April to 6 May, compared with 21.4 million for the election site in 2001.

Pete Clifton, the editor of 麻豆官网首页入口 News Interactive, said: "The election coverage was a fantastic team effort and we are delighted with these record-breaking figures.

"Interest built up throughout the campaign, and our ability to offer up-to-the-second results on the night really paid dividends."

For the first broadband election, bbc.co.uk/news offered exciting new features for its visitors, including an election basics guide answering all questions from how to vote to why ballots are secret.

Features included:
