The Boss speaks to Radio 2

Bruce Springsteen reveals heartbreak over loss of right-hand man in exclusive Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 2 interview ahead of London show this week

Ìý

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen has been talking exclusively to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 2 about the loss of his right-hand man Terry McGovern, ahead of his sold-out London date this week at London's O2 arena.

Ìý

In an interview with Radio 2's Johnnie Walker, to be broadcast tonight (Tuesday 18 December) at 10.30pm, Springsteen comments on how he desperately misses McGovern, his assistant of 23 years who died in his sleep this summer.

Ìý

Springsteen comments: "[Terry] was a fabulous figure of the 1960s. We became terribly close over that time. I still miss him bad."

Ìý

McGovern, who was a legendary figure of the New Jersey music scene, first met Springsteen in 1971 when he hired Springsteen's band to perform at a club he was then managing. In 1987 he formally joined Springsteen to become his full-time assistant both on and off the road.

Ìý

Springsteen also reflects in the one-hour special on performing with the E Street band, with whom he plays his first London date tomorrow night since The Rising tour in 2001.

Ìý

He says: "[The E Street Band are] my life long friends and that is going to go until the train stops ... the band right now is a reckoned machine – I think it's the toughest, tightest E Street Band we have ever had out on the road."

Ìý

Elsewhere in the interview, The Boss is critical of the current political climate in the United States, and talks about how he uses this as a source of inspiration for his latest album Magic.

Ìý

He says: "I try to write the songs that can be taken both kind of personally and politically, but my main inspiration for the record was just I wanted it to be probably one of the most playable E Street Band records we've had in a long time."

Ìý

Springsteen goes on to say: "I was able to infuse that with what's been going on back at home ... [and] those two things banging up against one another is what makes it work."
