Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú National Orchestra of Wales will perform a world-premiere by new Resident Composer Mark Bowden on 8 September at Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Hoddinott Hall, as part of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival of Music.

Mark Bowden, who was announced as the Orchestra's new Resident Composer in June this year, will write three new pieces for the Orchestra over the next three years, in conjunction with Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 3.

Mark's first commission with Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú National Orchestra of Wales will be his Cello Concerto, Lyra. He explains which soloist he had in mind when he was writing the work: "I'm composing the piece specifically for Oliver Coates, a wonderful cellist who is a friend and a colleague. He gave such fantastic performances of my previous works that I knew that I'd love to write a larger work for him."

The concert also features a suite for orchestra by Qigang Chen (music director of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics), followed by a work composed by the festival's Artistic Director John Metcalf. The concert concludes with a performance of Steve Reich's City Life.

The concert with Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú National Orchestra of Wales on Thursday 8 September, 7.00pm, at Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff Bay, is part of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival of Music.
