1. It's nearly 25 years old
Ring, a Novel by Koji Suzuki, was first published in 1991. In 1998 it was adapted into a Japanese film Ringu and in 2002 The Ring a Hollywood version was released.

2. Koji Suzuki is no fan of horror

3. His daughters inspired the work
Suzuki "the theme of the Ring is really about the love I have for my daughters.
For me the biggest fear is to lose my daughters or wife. So in my novel Asakawa, the protagonist, fought for the life of his wife and daughter."
4. He wanted a male protagonist in the film, but it wasn't to be
Suzuki felt a male hero would keep the story about a father protecting his daughter. But that’s not customary in Japan where protecting daughters is seen as the mother’s task, so the hero was changed to a heroine.
5. Ring borrows heavily from Japanese folklore..
Sadako the antagonist in Ring is similar to a Yuurei ghost – usually women with a white face, dark hair and a white kimono.
