Drink choices, episode 2: Keep It Simple
Mmm. Soup and a chicken stir-fry. It all sounded a little unexciting when I first saw the script for this show, but boy was I wrong. This is one of my favourite shows; sophisticated food with massive flavour.

Celery soup, poached egg & soda bread
1. Tio Pepe Dry Palomino (£8.50 Widely Available)
This is the bestselling sherry in the world, which makes the fantastic quality of this iconic dry wine all the more astonishing. Crisp fresh, dry and tangy with a lovely aroma of apples, sourdough bread and yup, you guessed it, fresh green celery. It’s a dry salty breakfast juice! No real surprise then that a couple of capfuls make a brilliant addition to any Bloody Mary.
2. Solera Jerezana Fino Puerto Fino Sherry (£9.75 Waitrose)
This sherry is quite outstanding. It is made by one of the finest sherry producers exclusively for a supermarket. I have drunk many dry sherries less good and twice the price. Wonderful, silky, eye-wateringly dry wine with a mouthwateringly tasty, herby flavour, and a grand, rich smooth texture in the mouth. First class stuff.
3. Manzanilla Pastrana NV Hidalgo (£11.99 Majestic)
Truly world class wine. The last one is probably the best sherry one can by for under a tenner, but it is sinful what a couple of odd extra quid will get you. This has extraordinarily complex flavours of allspice, shiitake mushrooms and lemon cake.
Monica’s honey and soy chicken with coconut, sesame rice & greens
1. Devil’s Rock Riesling 2013 (£7, Coop)
This is a first class example of the modern German wine. It’s hard to believe that this producer, like the others here, were responsible for making a large chunk of all that, ‘Hock’, ‘Piesporter’ and Liebraumilch from the seventies and eighties. It smells deliciously of nectarines and has a mouthwatering taste of apple sherbet. A great value, off-dry white that is delicious with salty, sweet and sour chicken. Yumcious.
2. Peter and Peter Riesling aus der Steillage 2013 (Tesco £7.49)
This wine is made by two wine makers. One is called Peter, and the other is called, well, Peter. They have succeeded - using some quite clever winemaking tricks in making a really interesting, food-friendly wine. Hey have left the wine on the dead yeast cells in the tank to enhance its flavour and to make it feel richer in the mouth. This is called ‘sur lie’ ageing, and gives a drink a soy quality. Perfect for the dish.
3. Kendermanns Special Edition Riesling 2013 (£7.40 Waitrose)
This wine on the other hand has taken a more purist approach. It is altogether crisper, purer and cleaner, but perhaps doesn’t have quite the complexity of the Peter and Peter Riesling. This is perhaps a better match for the rice balls. Crisp, zingy and refreshing.
