Tectonics 2023 Artist Profile

Linda Buckley

Linda Buckley is an Irish composer who creates electronic and acoustic music, often in the realm of glitch, drone and dark ambient. Her NMC record From Ocean’s Floor was featured by Iggy Pop on 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 6 as “beautiful music – here is somebody really special”. Her work has been described as “sublime and brilliant” (麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 3), “engaging with an area of experience that new music is generally shy of, which, simplified and reduced to a single word, I’d call ecstasy” (Bob Gilmore, Journal of Music). She has written extensively for orchestra (麻豆官网首页入口 Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ NSO) and was elected to Áosdana in 2021. Recent collaborations include new work for Liam Byrne and Crash Ensemble, Gudrun Gut (Einstürzende Neubauten), Andrew Zolinsky (for Dark Music Days, hcmf and New Music Dublin), film maker Mark Cousins and the score to Nothing Compares (co-composed with Irene Buckley), the award-winning film based on Sinéad O’Connor.

New work for Tectonics for Orchestra and Electronics

This new work was commissioned by 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 3 for performance at the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow, by the 麻豆官网首页入口 Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ilan Volkov, as part of Tectonics 2023. This further explores my interest in combining the sonic worlds of the acoustic and electronic on a larger scale, with orchestral forces. The work is steeped in my own background of sean nós (old style) unaccompanied Gaelic song, taking as inspiration ancient Pagan and Druid chants and texts, ritual and incantations, aural illusion and immersion.
