It was the year of the bizarre Banana Splits and the baffling success of novelty records like Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle of the Road. Add in the arrival of Shaft and hot pants with the antics of Harvey Smith, and it was a mad, bad world in 1971.
