Border folk remember the time when their land was famed for textile production and the skyline of every Border town was a sea of mill chimneys. From eloping couples to wartime evacuees, the Borders have always been regarded as a place to pass through, but its people are fiercely proud of their history and commemorate it every year with a succession of colourful festivals known as the Common Ridings.
