Malorie Blackman, and 18th Century Erotic Fiction

Mariella Frostrup and guests discuss the difficult business of getting a first book published. Children's author Malorie Blackman talks about her new novel The Stuff of Nightmares.

Malorie Blackman
Mariella is joined by Malorie Blackman, author of scores of books including the Noughts and Crosses Quartet. Malorie鈥檚 new book, The Stuff of Nightmares, deals with terrifying subject matter, including marriage to the devil, imprisonment and torture, and lethal acid rain, yet is aimed at young adults. Mariella finds out why she keeps a pen and notebook next to her bed.

Websites for Unpublished Authors
Publishers receive thousands of unsolicited manuscripts from as yet unpublished authors every week. So, if you want to have your book published, how do you give yourself the edge against all the other would-be authors? Two new websites may help you. Author Louise Doughty, Chief Executive of HarperCollins Victoria Barnsley and founder of meettheauthor.co.uk David Freeman tell Mariella how these websites work, and discuss whether they鈥檒l be a useful tool.

18th Century Erotic Fiction
Fanny Hill, Or Memoirs Of A Woman Of Pleasure was first published in 1749, and documents a series of trysts, encounters and liaisons. Judith Hawley, senior lecturer in English Literature at Royal Holloway, tells Mariella why this book was different from other erotica of the time, and explains the tradition this literature belongs to.
