Lord Mandelson says immigrants from Eastern Europe are simply taking jobs that Britons are "unwilling" or unable to take. He told MPs on the European scrutiny committee that there was "no statistically significant impact" on wages and there were still about 500,000 unfilled jobs.

And, with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants thought to be living in Britain, should we be trying to expel them, or as London Mayor Boris Johnson suggests, granting some of them the right to stay and the chance to become full members of society?
