Travelling from the tundra of northern Canada to the cities of southern Australia, from the pampas of Chile and Argentina to the mountain pastures of New Zealand, Donald Morrison presents a groundbreaking, provocative and intensely moving history of the dispersal of a people across the globe. This first programme investigates the earliest mass migrations from the Highlands of Scotland to the American South. Well before the crisis of the last Jacobite rebellion and the notorious Highland clearances, thousands of Highland men, women and children were making the journey to Georgia and the Carolinas in the first outbreak of 'emigration mania'. The programme looks at their struggle to create a community, and examines the way in which many - including former Jacobites such as Flora Macdonald - were drawn into fighting for the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War.
