Are politicians entitled to hold strong religious views?

A Morning Extra caller who said gays are "very sad people" has been exposed as a Borders councillor. Graham Stewart asks if such views are compatible with elected office.

A Morning Extra caller who said atheists were "damned to hell" and gays are "very sad people" has been exposed as a Borders councillor.

'Ken from Selkirk' called last Thursday's programme to condemn a public artwork which encouraged gays and other marginalised groups to deface a Bible.

It was only when a local newspaper identified our caller as SNP councillor Kenneth Gunn that gay rights groups and opposition politicians called foul.

So should politicians be entitled to their religious beliefs? Or are some views unbefitting an elected representative?
