Ellie

Episode 1 of 5

Five WAGs work in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in South Africa. Ellie Darby reflects on her 16-hour shifts in the babyhouse of Baphumelele Children's Home.

Five WAGs leave their pampered lives behind to experience the reality of life behind the gloss of the World Cup by rolling up their sleeves to work in some of the poorest and most deprived neighbourhoods in the host nation, South Africa.

The first leg of the trip is relived through the eyes of Ellie Darby, partner of England defender Matthew Upson. She is asked to work punishing 16-hour shifts in the babyhouse of Baphumelele Children's Home in the heart of Khayelitsha, one of South Africa's most dangerous townships.

But it is when Ellie steps outside the children's home to visit a family of teenage girls orphaned by AIDS that she realises the scale of the social breakdown in the poorest parts of South Africa.
