Robert Kubica emerged victorious two years ago after an incident-fuelled race that saw several drivers lead the Grand Prix at various stages. Nick Heidfeld and David Coulthard completed the eventual podium places. Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire along with Kimi Raikonen after only 19 laps after Hamilton hit Raikonen in the pitlane. They were both among numerous drivers to pit early with the safety car on the track after Adrian Sutil's abandoned car caught fire.
