Stuart Thomas from Creative Scotland discusses what Scottish bands get from playing at South by Southwest. Bands that use the Highlands as a testing ground for new material.
A preview of the Scottish bands heading to the South By Southwest Festival plus what is actually in it for Scottish bands? What do they gain from either spending a fortune to get to Austin or being sponsored to go there? And is there a danger they risk being lost in the great mass of bands and musicians from around the world?
Mumford and Sons, Franz Ferdinand, Glasvegas, Newton Faulkner, KT Tunstall and The Proclaimers are just a few of the bands who road tested their new material on audiences in the Highlands & Islands. Are Highland audiences being sold short by bands using them as guinea pigs or is it an exclusive opportunity for them to hear the new stuff first?
