Born Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert in Clarendon, Jamaica, Toots grew up singing in a gospel choir. Having trained as a barber and tried his hand at boxing, he left for Kingston where he began his musical career.
The first to use the word "reggae" on tape in his song Do The Reggay in 1968, his music has defined, popularised and refined the genre across six decades with hits including Pressure Drop, Sweet And Dandy, Monkey Man, Funky Kingston, Bam Bam, True Love Is Hard To Find and Reggae Got Soul.
Earlier this year he appeared in the 麻豆官网首页入口 Four documentary Toots and the Maytals: Reggae Got Soul and he is on tour with the Maytals in the UK this month.
Also on the show, a listener recalls their favourite musical memories in My 70s and Johnnie spins three tracks from a classic album.
