Sebastian Vettel blew the grid away as he stormed to his second successive world title in his unstoppable Red Bull RB7 car. Winning five out of the first six races gave him an impregnable lead, and he cruised through the rest of the season to win the title by an enormous margin.

As a result of the Red Bull team's dominance, it proved to be a frustrating season for British drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button. Their McLaren car excelled at times, but they both struggled to match the consistency of Germany's Vettel. Controversy dogged 2008 champion Hamilton throughout the season, as he fell foul of stewards and his rivals on the grid.
