Lyme Regis to Barnstable

Episode 5 of 10

John Sergeant travels to the south west to find out how much has changed since Victorian photographer Francis Frith attempted to document life in Britain.

Using an extraordinary cache of Victorian photographs as his guide, John Sergeant is on a journey around Britain, following in the footsteps of pioneer photographer Francis Frith and his team. Now all but forgotten, Frith was celebrated in his day for his attempts to document every city, every town and every village in the country. The results of his work have left us with an extraordinary record of life in the 19th century.

Today, John travels to the south west to find out how much has changed, how much has stayed the same and what is gone forever from the time of the Frith pictures, as well as taking his own photos. He visits an ancient watermill in Lyme Regis, investigates the dungeons of Exeter Guildhall and learns the techniques of farming with heavy horses.
