Johnnie talks to the South African keyboard player and frontman Manfred Mann. His Album of the Week is 1971's 'There's a Riot Goin' On' by Sly and the Family Stone.

Leaving his Earth Band at home, South African keyboard player and frontman Manfred Mann talks to Johnnie Walker.

After re-locating from South Africa to the UK in 1961, Mann and his blues-influenced crossover band went on to enjoy chart success with hits including Do Wah Diddy Diddy. In the 1970s Manfred formed Manfred Mann's Earth Band, having a major hit in 1976 with Bruce Springsteen's Blinded By The Light. Still performing with the Earth Band 35 years later, Manfred drops by to reminisce with Johnnie Walker.

Also on the show, listener Wendy Carlyle remembers her musical highlights in My 70s and our featured album is from Woodstock favourites, Sly And The Family Stone. Written at the dawn of the 1970s, There's A Riot Goin' On signals and explores the disintegration of the hippy era, with a dark, troubled but highly acclaimed piece of soul-rock funk. Johnnie chooses cuts from the record and remembers the making of the album.
