Twelve months ago the imperious Sebastian Vettel claimed a sixth pole position of the year. The Red Bull driver came under pressure from the Ferraris, with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa behind him on the grid. Mark Webber took fourth with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner late confirming the Australian's KERS had not been working during the session.
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth - the first time he failed to take pole position in Canada. This is something he will be looking to put right on one of his favourite tracks in 2012.
