In the Beechgrove Garden, Jim is trying out some new varieties of hardy annuals, but instead of sowing them direct, they have been given a fighting chance by being sown in seed trays in advance. Meanwhile, Carole is throwing caution to the wind and is direct sowing hardy annuals that are meant to be specifically bee friendly. Carole is also setting up the more tender crops in the Keder polytunnel, including cucumbers, physalis and tomatillo. She is also trying something new, the cucamelon - an exotic Mexican delicacy that should turn out to be the size of grapes, look like a watermelon and taste of cucumber and lime.

Jim is in the not so wild west at stunning Arduaine Garden near Oban. Arduaine is a wonderfully moist and mossy coastal garden, influenced beneficially by the North Atlantic Drift. It boasts 20 acres of outstanding woodland plants including not only a major rhododendron species collection with a leaning towards the more tender, but also all the usual spring-flowering favourites.

Carole revisits Rebeccah Stripling's garden in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. Carole first visited the garden in 2004, when she helped Rebeccah disguise her oil tank with plants. This year Rebeccah is opening her garden for the first time under Scotland's Gardens (the 'Yellow Book'). Carole finds out what the remit is to open your garden and what jobs need to be done to get the garden in great shape for the opening.
