British driver Lewis Hamilton earned his first pole position for his new Mercedes team at this circuit last year, but he had to settle for third in the race as Fernando Alonso won for the second time.
Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has taken pole position on three occasions in China but failed to win the race since 2009.
