In the last race in 2013, Germany's Nico Rosberg turned pole position into victory and, after an impressive start to the 2014 campaign, he was a strong contender for top spot in this race. Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton was also hotly tipped to climb the top step of the podium having been 2014's stand out performer to date.
In comparison Sebastian Vettel, second in 2013 in Monaco, has endured a tougher time and the four-time reigning champion would have been itching to rack up the points this weekend as he bids for title number five.
