Episode 5
Historical drama series. John's life hangs in the balance but the authorities are more concerned with punishing the 'rioters' than searching for his attacker.
The future of the farm hangs in the balance. John is in a coma following the blow to his head at the 'mass trespass'. Grace is in the grip of conflicting emotions - she needs John to live, but she is very afraid that he will recover and remember what he saw at the trespass.
Bert needs to know the truth from Grace about her feelings for Bill as rumours begin to circulate around the village about them.
Bairstow turns his energies towards deflecting attention from the Allingham gamekeeper's attack on John. He manipulates the police into starting an investigation into those behind the protest and accusing them of riot.
Bert and Eyre find themselves in the dock. The key witness is George Allingham, who saw them in The Lamb conspiring. In court, it is George's principles that will decide their fate, and his conscience puts him in opposition to his own family.
