Episode 4
Monica Galetti, Gregg Wallace and Marcus Wareing put five new chefs through their paces. They must prepare a woodcock for roasting and try to recreate Marcus's custard tart.
Two Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing joins perfectionist chef Monica Galetti, and MasterChef's seasoned diner Gregg Wallace to seek out up-and-coming culinary stars.
Five ambitious chefs plucked from kitchens across Britain arrive at the MasterChef kitchen to face the first of three daunting tests to determine who is good enough to progress to the next round, and who must leave.
First up it's the Signature Dish Test. The five chefs have one hour to cook one plate of food that showcases their talent, before one is sent home. Next, the remaining four chefs face Monica's Skills Test, where they must impress both Monica and Gregg by classically preparing a woodcock for roasting.
Finally, it's up to the four chefs to step it up for the formidable Marcus Wareing. In his version of the infamous Invention Test, Marcus demonstrates one of his favourite recipes to viewers at home. This time it's the custard tart, which he cooked for the Queen's 80th birthday.
The chefs are then given the main ingredient for the dish and a larder containing the rest of the components in Marcus' dish, as well as an array of other high quality ingredients. In their final chance to impress, the four have just ten minutes to compose and one hour to cook a spectacular dessert that will prove they are worthy of a quarter-final place.
It's the final chance to impress and Marcus and Monica face the difficult task of deciding who must go home and who goes through to the quarter-final.
