Choir for Ann (Part 1)
The tragic killing of Leeds school-teacher Ann Maguire in April shocked the nation. In the first of two parts, ‘Songs of Praise’ follows a choir coming together to pay tribute to this special lady; we find out how some of her former pupils are paying their respects through two of Ann’s much-loved songs.
Nicholas McCarthy
, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, Ìýdescribes his passion for playing the piano despite being born with only one hand. His parents explain how their pride in his abilities gives them inspiration. ÌýNicholas says that playing concerts in sacred buildings lifts his faith and gives him a sense of comfort. ÌýÌý
Johnny and Olfat
Johnny and Olfat are Syrian Christians now living in the UK. Last year they helped their elderly parents escape persecution and bombings in war-torn Aleppo, and brought them to the UK. But that left Johnny's brother and family still in Aleppo. Ade Adepitan sees them attempt to make contact with each other over the internet. Johnny and Olfat explain how their Christian faith compels them to forgive and offer love to their oppressors.
Thea Bristow
In 2004, Thea Bristow won £15 million on the National Lottery. But rather than splash out on expensive trappings, the first thing she and her husband Paul did was take their entire cub group on the holiday of a lifetime to Canada. And that was the first in a series of generous acts from buying part of their beloved Torquay United football club, to restoring the local church organ.
