On tonight's panel: Jim Allister MLA
Jim Allister is the leader of the Traditional Unionist Voice and represents North Antrim in the Northern Ireland Assembly. He resigned from the DUP in protest at their decision to go into government with Sinn F茅in and set up his own party, the TUV, in 2007. He told those at last weekend鈥檚 TUV annual conference that 鈥This Stormont executive has become a byword for chaos, waste and inaction鈥 and that the Executive will inevitably 鈥implode鈥. A qualified senior barrister, he is married with three children and two grandchildren.
Dolores Kelly MLA
Dolores Kelly is the deputy leader of the SDLP and has represented the constituency of Upper Bann since first being elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in November 2003. She was elected as Mayor of Craigavon in 1999 and was the first nationalist candidate to hold the post. At the SDLP annual conference in November she voiced her support for integrated education over shared education 鈥溾Shared Schools鈥 is a misleading concept. They are merely segregated schools who, sensibly, share resources. We must go beyond 鈥榮hared鈥 to 鈥榠ntegrated鈥欌. She previously worked as an occupational therapist and is married with four children.
Alan McQuillan
Alan McQuillan is a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly Independent Financial Review Panel whose role is to determine the salaries, expenses and pensions that should be paid to all elected members of the Assembly. Between November 1999 and October 2002 he was the Assistant Chief Constable of Belfast. During this time, major operations such as Holy Cross were taking place and the RUC was being rebranded and transformed into the PSNI. He subsequently held the role of Acting Deputy Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland from October 2002 to February 2003. He went on to head the Assets Recovery Agency and currently works as a consultant for a private security company.
John O'Dowd MLA
John O'Dowd is the Minister of Education and the Sinn Fein MLA for Upper Bann. He was a councillor on Craigavon Council before being elected to the Assembly in 2003. He originally trained to be a Chef before he took up full time politics. While Martin McGuiness fought the Irish Presidential election 2011, he was acting Deputy First Minister in his absence. John is married with 3 young children.
Arlene Foster MLA
Arlene Foster is Minister of Enterprise, Trade & Investment and DUP MLA for Fermanagh & South Tyrone. She has been an Assembly member since 2003 and was acting First Minister for six weeks in 2010.听 A lawyer by profession, she previously practised as a solicitor. She has said that a 鈥positive announcement鈥 on corporation tax should be made within the next few days.
Audience responses to tonight's debates
Q: Why doesn鈥檛 the Executive start by cutting its own expenses before cutting other people鈥檚 expenses?
Norman, Bangor - Time to abolish expenses that are being abused by these politicians who serve themselves.
Steve, Belfast听- As a civil servant my expenses are rightly examined and scrutinised. Why aren't the same checks and balances in place for all public servants and MLAs?
Tom, Dromara - How would the MLA鈥檚 fancy living on 拢70 per week like many on benefits?
David, Belfast - At a time when some people can鈥檛 put food on their table, it鈥檚 pathetic that MLAs can claim whatever they want.
听
Steve, Lisburn - They get far better wages than most working people and their jobs are a cushy number. Scrap all expenses.
Q: Has the level of current political debate in Northern Ireland reached a new low?
Bernie, Ballymena - Surely the Irish language should not be spoken in Stormont. After all we are British and English is our language.
Mona, Dungannon听-听 As an Irish speaker living under Stormont rule, what future can Arlene and Jim promise me and the thousands of other Irish speakers in this so-called 鈥渟hared future鈥 when they justify Gregory's disgraceful behaviour?
Phyllis, Lisburn听- Gregory Campbell's comments were an absolute disgrace. As a unionist he does not speak for me!
听
Q: Will Corporation Tax deliver a win or an own goal for the Northern Ireland economy?
Steve, Helens Bay听 - Please don't let our MLA's anywhere near control of coronation tax. It needs experience and intelligence to manage it.
听
Philip, Cookstown听 - Corporation tax should be reduced for small business and increased for larger conglomerates..
听
Lee, Carrickfergus - Fiscal powers for Stormont? What a ridiculous idea.
听
Q: Is there justification for a conscience clause?
听
Steve, Antrim -听Ashers are well within their right to refuse a request which is contrary to their beliefs.
George - What are the chances听of the flag protesters getting a red, white and blue cake baked in a Falls Road bakery?
Stephen听 - Where is the equality in the gay community, they鈥檙e forcing their opinion on everyone else? Time to get rid of the Equality Commission.
Padraig, Dungannon 鈥 It鈥檚 mad that all this bakery had to
say was that they were too busy to make this cake, it鈥檚 a cheap lesson for the
rest of us.
Q: Isn't听Shared Education the ultimate betrayal of Integrated Education?
Jackie, Fermanagh - What鈥檚 the difference between integrated education and shared education? If you want children to mix, it needs to be every day, not just sharing a football field or meeting up once a week.
Aidan, Derry -听 Shared and integrated education is the first stepping stone to expensive private Catholic education in the future.
Sarah, Armagh听- O'Dowd has betrayed the people of Clintyclay in relation to integrated education.
Philip, East Belfast - I agree with Catholic Education. Why? Until anti-Catholic bigotry ceases, fear-driven ghetto-living will pre-dominate for personal safety reasons. Thus educational segregation will mirror societal segregation.
Ian, Bangor - This is a fudge, as the Catholic Church doesn't want integrated education. Shame on them.
Conlon - Shared education is a cop out to ensure vested interests keep our children divided.
