A short programme, narrated by Julie Fowlis and featuring Dr D.W. Stewart and historian Murdo Beaton, that examines the devastating effect of WWI on the lives of the Gaels. In November 1918, Britain and her allies won the First World War, but the victory over Germany cost them dearly in lives; over 800,000 solders were lost and 1.7 million wounded.

There was no land fit for heroes waiting for the soldiers on their return from the war. The economy was ruined and the country was coming to terms with a lost generation. Many years would pass before the Highlands and Islands began to recover from the effects of WWI and decisions made in the summer of 1914 affect us still.
