Stories
Songs of Praise visits a dress rehearsal for the Liverpool Passion Plays, produced and performed by volunteers from the Cathedral and the Cathedral鈥檚 youth group. The plays, portraying the last days of Jesus' life are to be performed during Holy Week.
Liverpool Cathedral Bell Ringing
Pam Rhodes visits Liverpool Cathedral to see the impressive peal of bells, the highest and heaviest peal in the world. The star of the show is Great George, which at 14.5 tonnes is the 2nd heaviest bell in the world.
Handbell Family
The Dunblane Cathedral Handbell ringers are known across Scotland for their uplifting form of praise. At the centre of the larger group are three generations of the Wilson family who鈥檝e fostered a musical tradition with its roots in the ancient church.
Royal Sculpture
Songs of Praise meets sculptor Nina Bilbey as she sets her skills to the commission of a lifetime 鈥� creating two new statues of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Philip to adorn the west front of Canterbury cathedral in celebration of the Queen鈥檚 Diamond Jubilee.
We first visited Nina鈥檚 London workshop last August when her Majesty was still just a block of limestone and then catch up with her two days before the Royal unveiling. In Canterbury, Nina takes Diane Louise Jordan behind the covered scaffolding for an exclusive look at the finished statues and chats to her about how she feels about the Queen seeing her work. Diane also meets The Very Rev. Dr Robert Willis, Dean of Canterbury, to hear how these new statues are keeping alive the creative community that has existed in Canterbury for over 1400 years.聽
We then see the moment when, on Thursday this week, Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Philip visited Canterbury cathedral to unveil the two new statues 鈥� the first time in history the royal couple have unveiled statues of themselves.
