Chris Jackson hears the stories of some of the displaced families who fled the disruption of WWII and found sanctuary in the region.
War disrupted many lives across Europe - Polish families exiled to Siberia, Jewish children bundled to safety on the kindertransport trains, captured German prisoners held in camps across the north. Displaced families and those fleeing tyranny needed sanctuary and many found new lives here in the north east and Cumbria. Chris Jackson meets the new northerners and hears their extraordinary stories.

Although the fighting in Europe officially ceased on 8 May 1945, the effects of the World War Two were far from over.
With their homes destroyed and nations now under the control of the Soviet Union, millions of Eastern Europeans found themselves in displaced persons camps around the continent, waiting for the time they could return home.
