The legalisation of gay marriage last year was seen by many as the final chapter in the struggle for equality for lesbians and gay men. But not when it comes to pensions. Next week sees the latest round in an ongoing legal battle for the equal right to inherit "survivor pensions" in the case of a partner's death. The Government estimates that around a quarter of occupational schemes treat gay couples differently to heterosexual marrieds.

The Budget is fast-approaching, and at its heart will be the vexed question of how the Chancellor plans to reduce welfare spending.
