Forkhill Fly Counting
Forkhill River in the Ring of Gullion will see volunteers descend upon its banks this weekend to conduct a river fly counting survey to help monitor the health of our rivers. Helen Mark will be hearing from two of the volunteers, Patricia McCreesh and Rosemary Mulholland, who will be getting their feet wet to help in the fly-counting effort.
Good Luck at Banagher
Helen went along with local historian Ken McCormack to visit Banagher Old Church in the valley just beyond Dungiven. The church dates back to the 12th century and the ruins sit upon a mound surrounded by an ancient graveyard where one particular tomb has been a source of good luck for countless people throughout the centuries.
The History of the Drenagh Estate
The Drenagh Estate was home to the McCausland family for over 300 years. The McCauslands were, in the last century, one of the foremost land-owning families in the country and their lifestyle reflected that. However, that didn’t protect them from difficult and traumatic times. Henry Macrory began research into their family history, gaining access to thousands of personal letters and diaries all of which helped shape his book ‘One Family’. Helen met up with Henry in the grounds of the Drenagh Estate where she heard about the particularly extraordinary events surrounding Connolly McCausland in the 1940s.
