Family Fortunes

Documentary series. General manager Michael Larkin has a radical plan to turn the Post Office's fortunes around but it may be detrimental for smaller branches.

For nearly 400 years, the post office has been at the heart of our high streets, the centre of village life. But in recent years, keeping the doors of Britain's more than 11,000 post offices open has been costing the taxpayer millions, money the government has said it is no longer prepared to spend. Now general manager Michael Larkin has a radical plan to turn the Post Office's fortunes around - he wants to push into financial services and fill the gap left behind as the big banks close high street branches. But while his plan offers the hope of a brighter and more lucrative future for larger branches, under the new proposals smaller branches may find themselves offering fewer services, a fact that some postmasters are finding hard to swallow.
