Trouble in Scarborough
Documentary series following competing pound shop chains. A gaping hole is left in Poundworld boss Chris's management team as some of his top staff defect.
Pound shops are a fixture on almost every British high street, and competition between the big chains is ever more cut-throat. Now, they're not just competing for shoppers, but also their own staff.
In series one of Pound Shop Wars, Poundworld's regional manager Craig uncovered a plot by the competition to poach shop managers. But to Poundworld boss Chris Edwards' shock, his trusted lieutenant Craig has now jumped ship to join rival 99p Stores, and in a final twist of the knife, he has taken another three senior staff with him.
Following the departure of Craig and his team, Chris plugs his management hole by promoting his hottest young prospects. Newly promoted area manager Stacey Mitchinson quickly finds one of the shops she's now responsible for has suffered a massive decline in standards - and an even bigger fall in profits. Scarborough is one of Chris's oldest stores. As a bucket-and-spade paradise, it should be a gold mine, but sales are stagnant, and it currently has no permanent regional, area or shop manager. The cracks are blindingly obvious, so Stacey sends in an emergency manager, Cheryl Galloway, who finds staff morale, sales and standards have fallen to a new low.
While some shops like Scarborough require more attention, others are a dream. Store manager Geoff Heathcote and his second-in-command Ian Gilbert take huge pride in Poundworld's Burnley branch. With rival 99p Stores right next door, the competition for the one-pound crown is higher than ever, especially when their management decides to hit Poundworld where it really hurts - in their one-pound price point.
