Halloween High Jinks
Documentary series following competing pound shop chains. Rival stores Cardiff and Swansea compete for the crown of Best Halloween Pound Shop in South Wales.
Seasonal sales can make or break a pound shop. In the last few years, flogging fake blood and cut-price costumes has made monster Halloween sales for Poundworld boss Chris. This year, he's decided the company will create their own friendly Halloween characters to try to generate multi-sales within each store. With 500 different products, it'll be their biggest ever range.
Welsh regional manager Dave thinks that Halloween might be just the boost he needs for his struggling flagship Cardiff store. Seven weeks ago, Chris opened one of his most expensive branches in the middle of a city-centre, upmarket shopping centre. With its prime location, the store opened with a big fanfare and even bigger expectations, but as the excitement of the grand opening slipped away, so too did manager Duncan's sales.
Compared to bustling city centre stores, Andrea's store on a retail park in Swansea gets far fewer customers, but the spend per basket is high. Dave decides to encourage both shops to up their game by pitting the staff in Cardiff against their rivals in Swansea, to see who can achieve the highest number of sales of Halloween products.
With the sales battle in South Wales in full swing and city pride at stake, Duncan is confident Cardiff's 66,000 students will help him win. The shopping centre is holding a student-only late-night event, with some shops offering discounts of up to 50%. Duncan gambles a week's worth of overtime on paying his staff to work late because he's counting on the students spending big in his shop, but will they?
Chris has made his reputation by keeping one simple rule: 'Everything One Pound', but out of the 5000 products he sells, one or two in each store cost more than a quid. They're called Manager's Specials, and are the latest 'must-have' product. This week, one of the Manager's Specials is a pair of dancing water speakers. Retailing at 拢14.99, they're almost fifteen times more than his other products. But Manager's Specials are causing a backlash from some shoppers, and one makes a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority. Chris is adamant he's doing nothing wrong, but what will the Advertising Standards Authority say?
As the end of October draws ever closer, will Swansea or Cardiff win the inaugural title of Best Halloween Pound Shop in South Wales?
