Barra Beach
In a special programme Dougie and Sarah explore the Outer Hebrides islands of Barra, Eriskay, South and North Uist. Sarah arrives in the islands on a plane which lands on Barra Beach.
Cockling
The beach, which is used as an airport several times a day also happens to be one of the most productive Cockle beaches in the islands. Donald Maclean, who runs a shellfish company on the island, gives Sarah a lesson in Cockling.
Leaving Home Project
John Mahar is the former drummer with punk-rock band, The Buzzcocks. He moved to the Western Isles a number of years ago and became fascinated with taking photographs of abandoned croft houses. His photographs are now being used in an exhibition called 鈥淭he Leaving Home鈥 project.
Eriskay Ponies
Sarah travels by ferry from Barra to Eriskay to find out about the plight of the islands increasingly rare native ponies.
Lochmaddy Marina
Dougie visits the new Marina in Lochmaddy which is providing shelter for sailors as well as valuable income for the local community.
Coastal Erosion
Sarah visits the west coast of North Uist to see examples of coastal erosion 鈥 a gradual process that is seeing the land reclaimed by the sea.
Modern Crofter
Dougie meets the epitome of a modern day Crofter. John Allan Mclellan has cattle on several crofts, runs a plant-hire and construction business and also owns a camping and caravan park.
