The Gate Arts Centre, set among the closely packed terraced streets of Cardiff鈥檚 Roath district, has been celebrating its tenth anniversary.聽聽
A former Presbyterian church, it offers a huge range of activities for assorted community groups.聽 There鈥檚 ceroc dancing and ballet.聽 You can learn Welsh, keep fit through yoga or pilates, sample jazz, classical recitals, opera and much more.聽 Internationally celebrated artists are welcomed here - and so are the young hopefuls who turn up for regular open mic sessions.Unlike many of the chapels across Wales which have been closed and converted to other uses, The Gate remains quietly sensitive to its roots. It鈥檚 owned by a trust belonging to one of the city鈥檚 younger churches, part of the Glenwood Faith Community.聽
聽Despite the fact that it has a pulpit in its caf茅 bar, no one gets preached-at from it.聽 Yet Roy Jenkins explores how it welcomes all-comers while remaining quietly sensitive to its roots.
