Wrexham鈥檚 super prison is due to open in 15 months time.聽 Costing 拢212 million and with more than two thousand inmates, it will be the largest in the UK; and this week the government announced the building of a further nine new prisons.
Reformers have largely welcomed the replacement of a string of city centre Victorian jails, but argue that the most pressing issue is that far too many people are being held in the first place.
At the start of the ecumenical Prisons Week, we ask, what are prisons for?聽 Are they doing what they should? And to what extent are they the business of communities of faith?
